Collectors Corner - AugustGround
Both an artist and a collector, AugustGround shares more about himself below — in his own words — along with a selection of gems from his 4,000+ piece collection on objkt.com.
"Hello, this is AugustGround. A pseudonym that is a nod to eating dirt-to staying grounded in the noble earth, even as we drift through the digital oceans that we create and dream within. I am a citizen of the world -well traveled and occasionally well-shod. A clod too, moistened by clouds. A fool for ART.
Raised in a monastery- educated in various art schools and then gypsy wandered for an eternity or two-cities and more cities -habitué of museums and undergrounds-devouring culture-Always in so many worlds- theatre, film, painting, poetry, music -collecting, experimenting, creating.
And then the world of digital art. Drifted in sideways from trading crypt currencies. Was fascinated and astonished by what I was finding-soon it became an obsession. Finding artists and art from all over the world. Multiple chains. Down the wormhole to find the gems. Spent what I had - made more - spent that - a collection of some of the worlds most incredible ART.
And the sense I was watching art history being made. New arenas in the canon-Glitch, pixel, AI, from the cultural detritus new ART was being made in front of me day by day. And the world was sleeping through it-Glitch babies and pixel pioneers, punk and anarchistic modes - all emerging, so much experimentation and passion. Went through so many worlds - The horrors of Open Sea and 10,000 plus PFPs and finally found Tez and Dailyxyz. Quality rises and shines.
Started translating my work into this new medium. Moments of life - my genesis collection sold out —The stage where life unfolds. LIMELIGHT series.”
“A striking convergence of light, color, and symbolism”, the 3rd piece in the Limelight series (below) titled "3 LIMELIGHT/DUNCEHATS, 83 cents and a few BLOODSTAINS" offers a haunting commentary on value, shame, and sacrifice. The three cones of light - blue, green, and red - cast their glow on the scattered coins, each spotlight resembling a dunce hat, traditionally associated with public humiliation and scorn. The precise arrangement of these lights suggests a stage, where these objects have been deliberately placed for an audience’s scrutiny.
The inclusion of bloodstains adds a chilling layer of meaning, suggesting that the cost of exposure, or perhaps the pursuit of recognition, has been steep. The coins, small in number and value, might symbolise the meager rewards of such endeavours, contrasting sharply with the intensity of the light and the implied suffering. This composition invites the viewer to ponder the price of visibility and the weight of societal judgment, where the interplay of light and shadow reveals much more than just a simple stage—it uncovers a narrative of struggle, loss, and the fleeting nature of material worth.”
“To try to curate some of the gems from 4000+ is impossible but here you go… anyone in the scene will recognize at least a few of these modern masters.”
We recommend exploring all of his creations, such as ‘ALL THE WORLD’, created for for GIFDAY2024, featured on our front page on Sunday 8th September —a play of shadow and light, or ‘BIRTH OF #TEZPOLE’, capturing the conversation where he coined the term "TezPole”. Another remarkable work is his conceptual piece "Falling Star #1," the GENESIS piece in a new performance/conceptual series built around highly improbable or unlikely events.
“This first piece - Falling Star #1 -consists of witness descriptions and Notarized documents attesting to a MINOR MIRACLE. At a local hot springs in front of a group of strangers I predicted that a star would fall at the end of my 5 second countdown. At precisely the predicted moment, A SINGLE STAR FELL ACROSS THE NIGHT SKY, leaving a beautiful and visible tail. A shared sense of disbelief and wonder fell upon the group. I immediately conceived this artwork and gathered contact info. The collector receives the conceptual beauty and evidence of the event.”
And last but not least, we recommend to listen to this excellent space with @pocobelli:
